From 2024 to 2025
A Year of Observation, Research, and Sharing

CHRONICLE

In the field or the lab, walking under the clouds or working behind a desk, NeurAstra had an extraordinary year filled with achievements:

  • 10 new Cassini Tours were organised to explore our surroundings with curiosity.
  • 9 books were discussed with The Dog-Ear Club.
  • 1 new citizen science initiative was launched to reconnect the public with their environments.
  • 3 short exhibitions were displayed at our headquarters, blending science and art to engage diverse audiences.
  • and many exciting new research projects were conducted!

Here are some highlights from this year’s standout initiatives:

Cosmic Connections

— Educational Gatherings

We had the privilege of hosting two inspiring events in 2024 under the banner of Cosmic Connections. These gatherings brought together science enthusiasts, researchers, and experts to explore fascinating topics related to human adaptability and life in space.

The first event, Cosmic Connections I — Life Without Gravity, took place in January in Alp, Spain. Through engaging lectures, hands-on workshops focused on designing objects to adapt to microgravity for use aboard the International Space Station, and a thrilling ballooning session over the Pyrenees, participants explored the science of microgravity and its profound impact on life in space—while also experiencing the sensation of flying!

Later in the year, in October, we gathered for Cosmic Connections II — Bridging the Gap between Space Radiation and Space Exploration in Menthon-Saint-Bernard, France. This time, the focus was on the nature and effects of space radiation and its implications for human exploration in deep space. The event featured lectures and an interactive workshop to design future habitats on Mars, fostering interesting discussions and creative exchanges. The day concluded with a visit to the historic Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard, once home to Saint Bernard, founder of hostels and shelters that protected travellers crossing the mountains. The visit beautifully echoed our thematic workshop, where participants worked on designing Martian shelters for future spacefarers venturing into deep space.

These two events offered an incredible opportunity to connect, share findings, and harness creativity to explore the frontiers of human adaptability without boundaries. A heartfelt thank you to the NeurAstra organising team and the participants from France, Spain, Andorra, Switzerland, and the UK for their invaluable contributions. We are excited to begin preparations for Cosmic Connections III!

Neurodegeneration & Neuroinflammation in Deep Space
— Neurons and Glial Cells under Space Radiation

This project investigates the impact of space radiation on the human central nervous system, focusing on neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory processes. Beginning with a comprehensive literature review, the research has evolved into an experimental phase, proposing the use of iPSCs (induced pluripotent stem cells) to study the effects of long-duration space radiation exposure under simulated conditions.

We were thrilled to see this project exhibited at the ELGRA (European Low Gravity Research Association) 2024 Symposium. Moving forward, we will continue this exciting research in collaboration with a Swiss institute—more details to come soon!

NeurAstra Educational Programme (NAEP)
— Educational Research Programme

“The most obvious characteristic of science is its application:
the fact that, as a consequence of science, one has a power to do things.”

Richard Feynman

For the inaugural edition of the NeurAstra Educational Programme (NAEP), titled the Feynman Promotion, eleven young researchers embarked on a year-long journey of discovery and learning. Through their individual projects, they explored diverse scientific topics, blending creativity and precision to showcase the beauty and rigour of science. Along the way, they gained experience to contribute to practical and applicable scientific solutions, embodying the spirit of Feynman’s vision of science in action.

We are also thrilled to announce the launch of our second edition in 2025: the Flammarion Promotion
If you are interested in participating, applications are open until January 31, 2025: Apply here.

Analogue Training & Navigational Skills (ANTS)
— Excursion in the Andorran and Spanish Pyrenees

The ATNS-I project represents NeurAstra’s first field study exploring human adaptability in mountain and high-altitude environments, focusing on cognitive performance, physiological responses, and team cohesion under environmental stress. Conducted in the Andorran and Spanish Pyrenees, the project aimed to address the challenges faced in isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) environments, drawing parallels to space missions. Using Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) tools and wearable devices, we gathered real-time data that provided interesting insights, laying the groundwork for deeper investigations in future ATNS projects.
