Mapping & Understanding Spaces

Taking inspiration from the innovative work of Edward Quin* and his use of cloud-like shapes in maps to symbolise unknown territories and the unexplored, Altanube Pando seeks to rise and expand our sight to identify the general features of the universe and chart the world through a creative combination of geographic precision and artistic expression.

Cartography has come a long way from the rudimentary maps of ancient civilisations to the highly sophisticated digital maps of today. Fortunately, designing maps has remained a precious historical source of information reflecting how societies perceive and interact with their surroundings. Therefore, beyond the sole notions of geography or topography of territories, we are convinced that emphasising the notion of terroirs, with their unique characteristics and landmarks, is crucial to depicting exhaustively spaces and the place humans occupy in them.

→ Cassini Tours

The concept of Cassini Tours arose while studying the system of information and models used in maps and how the earth’s corners were represented through the ages—or sometimes not represented at all. Through these drawn lines, we started to discern that representing the world in two dimensions was not as easy as it could appear. Some choices must be made to allow map readers to understand them and follow their indications accurately. Some characteristics need to be excluded, while others must be highlighted because of their relevance. This approach inspired us to design our own maps and itineraries, with a careful—but arbitrary—selection of segments from the vivid world.
