ATNS — Analogue Training & Navigational Skills is Specteore’s field module, framing each excursion as a compact analogue mission. It blends disciplined navigation (route planning, map/compass/GPS, and terrain reading) with expedition practice (clear roles, checklists, comms windows, time-boxes, and clean data capture) so we can conduct robust Earth science whilst rehearsing off-world operations.

The aim is to sharpen situational awareness and decision-making, secure reliable observations, and understand how teams move, think and coordinate in complex terrain; each exercise yields a route card, a field log and a replayable navigation trace as clear evidence of research in the field.

The challenges of human adaptation to isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) environments have been extensively studied in contexts such as space missions and Antarctic expeditions. These settings, where individuals are cut off from their usual social and sensory environments, require a deep understanding of both psychological and physiological coping mechanisms. This article is the first of a series of Research in the Field exploring the dynamics of psychological resilience, adaptation, and team cohesion.
