The world’s first ski lift was built in 1908 in Schollach, Germany. It was a simple rope tow powered by an old car engine, transporting skiers up the hill. This invention revolutionised skiing, making it more accessible to the public and marking the beginning of modern ski resorts and recreational skiing as we know it today. Indeed, skiing is now a popular winter sport and recreational activity involving gliding over snow-covered terrain. It can be enjoyed in various forms, including downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and freestyle skiing, each with its own techniques, equipment, and terrain.
In the early 20th century, Fridtjof Nansen who was a Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, and humanitarian, best known for his groundbreaking Arctic expeditions and contributions to polar exploration, trained his dog, Nanook, to ski with him during his polar expeditions. Nanook became quickly adept at pulling sleds and navigating icy terrain on skis.
